چکیده

Handheld devices are enhancing many aspects of our lives. As increasingly complex devices appear with decreasing form factors, haptics may become an essential tool for interacting with them. In this regime of operation, issues of power, weight and volume are of significant importance. The haptic thresholds of the index finger for active exploration of a two dimensional virtual environment for two icon alignments and two finger motions were measured. Using all possible combinations of two finger motions, flexion/extension and finger abduction/adduction, and two icon alignments, vertical and horizontal, were measured separately. Haptic thresholds ranged from 15 to 24 milliNewtons. Thresholds were affected by finger motion, but not by icon alignment.

Haptic object perception: spatial dimensionality and relation to vision.

Enabled by the remarkable dexterity of the human hand, specialized haptic exploration is a hallmark of object perception by touch. Haptic exploration normally takes place in a spatial world that is three-dimensional; nevertheless, stimuli of reduced spatial dimensionality are also used to display spatial information. This paper examines the consequences of full (three-dimensional) versus reduce...

Relative Performance Using Haptic and/or Touch-Produced Auditory Cues in a Remote Absolute Texture Identification Task

The current study assessed the relative effectiveness with which unimodal tactile, unimodal touch-produced auditory, and bimodal tactile + auditory cues contribute to the performance of an absolute texture identification task via remote touch. The study contributes to our fundamental understanding of the unimodal perception and intersensory integration of multimodal surface texture cues generat...

Integration of touch attention mechanisms to improve the robotic haptic exploration of surfaces

This text presents the integration of touch attention mechanisms to improve the efficiency of the action-perception loop, typically involved in active haptic exploration tasks of surfaces by robotic hands. The progressive inference of regions of the workspace that should be probed by the robotic system uses information related with haptic saliency extracted from the perceived haptic stimulus ma...

A visual-haptic Necker cube reveals temporal constraints on intersensory merging during perceptual exploration.

When viewing a three-dimensional Necker cube with one eye, participants can experience illusory reversals even while they feel the cube with their hands. This surprising property of the visual-haptic Necker cube affords a unique opportunity to investigate temporal constraints on interactions between vision and touch during extended observation of a three-dimensional object. Our observers report...

The organization of exploratory behaviors in infant locomotor planning.

How do infants plan and guide locomotion under challenging conditions? This experiment investigated the real-time process of visual and haptic exploration in 14-month-old infants as they decided whether and how to walk over challenging terrain - a series of bridges varying in width. Infants' direction of gaze was recorded with a head-mounted eye tracker and their haptic exploration and locomoto...
